Is Job Corps as Bad as It Sounds?
Question by Ten: Is Job Corps as bad as it sounds?
I haven’t seen ads on tv for a while, but my friend’s uncle went in the 60’s and he said that I should look into it. But I haven’t done any crime so I am not sure if I could go. I always hear a bunch of bad things about the kids that go. I am just poor and can’t afford college, is it where I want to be? I don’t need rehab and I don’t want to go to something like Jail or Prison. What is it like?

Oh goodness no!
I am currently attending a Job Corps in Oregon and let me tell you, it is not like that at all!
Back when Job Corps started (mid 60s to early 70s) there was something called “Jail or Job Corps”. What that meant was when you were arrested for a crime the judge could give you a choice, go to jail or go to Job Corps. But that ended almost 40 years ago! No, Job Corps does not let criminals into their program, like sex offenders, burglars, rapists, murders and the like. But if you stole a candy bar when you were 12 and it is still on your record you are probably fine.
I read things on the internet that there are beatings, muggings, rape and all kinds of crazy things going on at Job Corps. And I can honestly say that those things just don’t happen, it is not something that happens frequently at Job Corps. Anytime you have a large population of people living in one place there is always the potential that something will happen. But it is not an everyday thing.
There are people that do have a past of doing drugs, as does everywhere you go to school. But no, it is not a rehab center.
This is a place for young people to go to get a free education and better themselves.
